Lady GaGa Makes, Breaks, and Becomes History on YouTube

The number one music video on YouTube is Lady GaGa’s ‘Bad romance’.  YouTube reports that the five minute music video has had over 183,497,434 views since April 14, 2010.  This is a true testament of Lady GaGa’s global popularity, her unique brand of art-pop, and the cultural phenomenon of YouTube.

The popularity of the video is partially due to the long awaited release of ‘Bad Romance’.   The day it was to be released on GaGA.com, high activity caused the site to grind to a halt.  A brief clip premiered on German TV, and the video became an immediate YouTube hit.

Popularity of the video soars with its artsy dance music, and is pleasing to the senses for the entire five minute run time.  Its partial nudity, choreography and artful presentation make it an event.  It’s a spectacle demanding repeated viewings because there are so many ‘did you see that?’ moments.  It has a creepy, spooky factor, and is total out-of-this-world blog fodder.

It’s an explosion of art and news.  The beautiful and scary, outrageous costumes; the unbelievable dance workouts and performances; and incredible staging are all a crucial part of the plot.  Lady GaGa is quickly kidnapped and sold to the Russian Mafia.  She is then poisoned with vodka, and transforms into a new GaGa.

In ‘Bad Romance’, the scenes of her with no makeup or clothes, shows her stripped of her outer layers, singing into the camera while shedding a tear.  The old GaGa is over, and the new one is here.  She has made an inspired jump-off to the next leg of her career.  She is an established star conquering her art.

It is no wonder that Time Magazine has named Lady GaGa the number one most influential artist of 2010.  An artist’s job is to capture today, give a picture of what it is like to be alive, now.  She does this with every video and every song.  She will continue being an influential artist.
